If you want the short answer: 8×42 is the standard recommendation for birdwatching, and 8×32 is often better for garden use because it’s lighter and easier to hold steady.
Resist the pull towards higher magnification. 10x sounds better than 8x and generally isn’t, for reasons explained below.

What the numbers mean
Every pair of binoculars is described by two numbers, like 8×42.
The first number is magnification. 8x means the bird appears eight times closer than with the naked eye.
The second is the objective lens diameter in millimetres. 42 means the front lenses are 42mm across. Bigger lenses gather more light, which means a brighter image — particularly in dull British weather and at dawn and dusk.
Why 8x beats 10x for most people
This is counterintuitive and it’s the most useful thing on this page.
1. Shake. Magnification amplifies hand tremor as well as the image. At 10x, small movements become very obvious, and holding a steady view is genuinely harder. Most people see more detail through 8x binoculars than 10x, simply because the image isn’t wobbling.
2. Field of view. Lower magnification gives a wider view, which makes finding a bird much easier — especially a small one moving through a hedge. At 10x you spend more time hunting for the bird than looking at it.
3. Brightness. Divide the objective size by the magnification and you get the exit pupil — the width of the light beam reaching your eye. An 8×42 gives 5.25mm; a 10×42 gives 4.2mm. The 8x is noticeably brighter in poor light.
4. Close focus. Lower magnification models generally focus closer, which matters in a garden where the feeder might be five metres away.
10x has its place for open landscapes, estuaries and distant raptors. For a garden, it’s the wrong tool.
32mm or 42mm?

For garden watching specifically, 8×32 is often the better buy. The binoculars you’ll actually pick up are the ones that live on the windowsill and don’t feel heavy. A 42mm pair that stays in a cupboard because it’s cumbersome is worse than a 32mm pair in constant use.
If you expect to use them at reserves and in poor light too, go 8×42.
Eye relief — critical if you wear glasses
Eye relief is the distance your eye can sit from the eyepiece and still see the full field of view.
If you wear glasses, your eyes sit further back — so you need at least 15mm of eye relief, and preferably more. Below that, you’ll see a restricted, tunnel-like view, which is deeply frustrating.
Look also for twist-down eyecups, which let you retract the cups when wearing glasses and extend them when not. Older rubber fold-down cups perish over time.
This single specification matters more than almost anything else for spectacle wearers, and it’s routinely buried in the product details.
Close focus — matters more in a garden
Close focus is the minimum distance at which binoculars will focus sharply.
For garden use this is genuinely important — your feeder might be five metres from the window, and some binoculars won’t focus closer than six or seven. Look for under 3m, which also makes them useful for butterflies and dragonflies.
What else is worth checking
- Waterproof / fogproof — nitrogen-purged sealed models won’t fog internally with temperature changes. Worth having even for garden use, given you’ll take them outside
- Roof prism vs porro prism — roof prism models are slimmer and more common now; porro prisms can offer better value optically at low prices but are bulkier. Either is fine
- Coated optics — “fully multi-coated” is the term to look for. It reduces glare and improves contrast
- Focus wheel — should be smooth and reachable with your index finger without shifting grip
- Diopter adjustment — lets you correct for a difference between your eyes. Set it once, properly, when you first use them

How much to spend
Honest framing rather than specific prices, since these move constantly:
Entry level (£20–£50). Perfectly usable 8×42 and 8×32 binoculars exist at modest prices and are a huge step up from nothing. Expect heavier build, less impressive low-light performance, and less durable coatings.
Mid range (£50–£150). This is where the value sits for most people. Noticeably better brightness, sharper edges, better build, proper waterproofing. If you’re likely to use them regularly, this is the bracket worth stretching to.
Premium (£150–£300+). Genuinely better — brighter, sharper, lighter, built to last decades. Real diminishing returns for garden use, and not where a beginner should start.
Practical advice: buy mid-range 8×32 or 8×42 from an established optics brand rather than premium specifications from an unknown one. Optical quality is hard to fake and cheap “high spec” binoculars usually disappoint.
Do you even need them for garden birds?
A fair question, and worth being honest about.
If your feeder is a few metres from a window, you may not. Plenty of people watch garden birds perfectly happily with the naked eye.
Binoculars earn their place when you want to:
- See detail on a bird at the far end of the garden or on a neighbour’s roof
- Identify something unfamiliar, where fine detail decides it
- Watch nesting behaviour without approaching
- Take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch and count accurately
- Extend to local walks, parks and reserves
That last point is usually the deciding one. Garden birdwatching has a way of becoming birdwatching generally.
Setting them up properly
Most people never do this, and then wonder why the image isn’t sharp.
- Adjust the barrel width until you see one circular image, not two
- Set the eyecups — twisted up if you don’t wear glasses, down if you do
- Set the diopter: cover the right lens, focus on something with the main wheel using your left eye only. Then cover the left lens and adjust the diopter ring until it’s sharp for your right eye. Note the setting and leave it alone
- Use the main focus wheel for everything from then on
Common questions
Is 10×42 better than 8×42?
Not for most people, and not for gardens. 8x gives a steadier image, a wider field of view and better low-light performance. 10x suits open country and distant birds.
Can I use binoculars with glasses on?
Yes, provided eye relief is at least 15mm and the eyecups twist down. Check this specification before buying — it’s the most common cause of disappointment.
Are expensive binoculars actually worth it?
Up to a point. The jump from budget to mid-range is significant and worth paying for. Beyond that, improvements are real but incremental, and less noticeable in garden conditions.
What about a spotting scope?
Overkill for a garden. Scopes suit distant, static subjects — estuaries, lakes, raptor watching — and need a tripod.
Can I photograph birds through binoculars?
Phone adapters exist and can work, but results are typically poor compared with a camera and a long lens. Binoculars are for watching.
How do I stop the image shaking?
Lower magnification helps most. Beyond that: brace your elbows against your body or a windowsill, hold the barrels rather than the eyepieces, and breathe out as you look.
